       Of the crow-blue mussel-shells, one keeps

   accident—lack

       of cornice, dynamite grooves, burns, and

Repeated
       evidence has proved that it can live
       on what can not revive
              its youth. The sea grows old in it.

Analysis

This poem by Marianne Moore was written in 1918, and titled "The Fish". It details scenery of the the ocean and sea-life. When originally viewing this poem, it seemed as if there was a lot of imagery that didn't connect together. As if it was all random and badly placed, this was very confusing and demanded a further analysis. After doing research and repeatedly re-reading the poem I came up with this analysis of the poem.

The transitions  are clear and smooth, they embody a lot of the raw entity of the poem which results in something that flows extremely well. The narrator has a very empty way of describing things, very real and without emotion. Everything is clear and understandable because, nature doesn't show sympathy for all the good you've done. Everyone dies, faces misfortune at some point; the narrator really try's to represent  this. This causes the poem to feel very authentic and every word to come alive.

The poem is set underwater in the ocean, and then it is briefly above the water while "The water drives a wedge of iron through the iron edge of the cliff". After this, the poem takes us to the stars, and then back to the ocean.  There is always a sense of rapidness and movement in this poem that makes it constant

In the 3rd stanza, there is an clear use of alliteration with all the "S" sounds (ex: sun, split, spun). The alliteration helps accent the sun's part in this poem and moves away from the cold and dark imagery that is found everywhere else.

If I was to rate this poems difficulty, I would give it a 7/10. It has a lot of imagery and not always obvious symbolism which makes it more than simply a fish swimming through water. A lot of things need to be re-read and analyzed to decipher this poem. It makes it a challenge to uncover all the rich secrets hidden within this 8 stanza poem. Because the poem is so descriptive and has so much buried into it, it makes it all worth it when you fully understand the meaning.

Forever Analysis

Forever

Forever we remain oblivious to the future,
lost to the past and enduring our torture.
Forever we take chances to settle our scores,
losing some battles and winning some wars.
Forever praying out loud hoping someone will hear,
forever crying softly but never shedding a tear.
Forever exists behind a disguise,
but the belief in forever keeps our hearts alive.

Forever is a short poem about the struggles and positives of life and what they mean. In 8 lines it captures a lot of meaning and power. It was written by war veteran Terri Nicole Tharrington in 2012.

As an american war veteran, it is obvious that a lot of the sorrow and pain in this poem comes from her pain in the war. It shows a lot imagery because of how descriptive and real the poem is. It was written from a place of pain but also hopefulness. All of this seems to bleed through in just a few short lines.

"Forever we remain oblivious to the future, lost to the past and enduring our torture."

This is to say that no matter how much there is certainty towards something in our life's, nothing is to ever be guaranteed or completely certain. There is always  the possibility of something going wrong. It is very important to know nothing can ever be assumed, and even if you think something is obvious to another person. They are oblivious to your thought, requests, and desires. 

"Forever we take chances to settle our scores, losing some battles and winning some wars." 

This represents humans aggression and always wanting to beat others. never settling for being even or equal. Although one may lose the less important things, they may win what really matters. This could also be interpreted as; you may not always receive the little wins (accomplishments, goals, achievements) but if you work hard at what you want to achieve and consistently try hard at it. You will achieve what you want to achieve. These are both possible interpretations of the poem.

"Forever praying out loud hoping someone will hear, forever crying softly but never shedding a tear." 

Everything you say, is never heard. You feel that no one cares, no one wants to talk to you, be around you, think about you. But you still hope, deep inside that it's just your attitude and what you feel. You pray that even one person still enjoys your presence, your time, your emotion. But you never show this, or represent it. You keep it hidden deep in the hole that is your heart.

This means to represent, what is forever. What does it mean, what does it represent. Time goes by so quickly that forever never is forever, it is when. When will the pain end, when will the joy arise. Forever was the title and emphasis of this poem, but instead it shows that time is limited. You think you have all this time ahead of you. But you have very little time instead.

I really connect and resonate with this poem. It shows that time is always limited, and trust can always be deceived. No matter how long you think you have to love, or enjoy what you have, know that it can and may go away in the blink of the eye. There may be nothing you can do about this as well. This poem really shows that life has many ups and downs and uncontrollable factors.
